6 Ways To Keep Your Cat Healthy

February 1, 2020

February is National Cat Health Month! While kitties are known for being fairly self-sufficient, they do need good care to stay happy and healthy. Read on for some great tips from a Chesapeake, VA vet on keeping your cat healthy.

Good Food

Proper nutrition will go a long way towards keeping your feline buddy in good condition. Offer your kitty the best food you can afford. Make any changes to your pet’s diet slowly, as otherwise she may get an upset tummy. Also, be careful not to overindulge your cat. Obesity can have some very serious health consequences for pets. If Fluffy is, well, not just fluffy, that plaintive meow could be a lie!

Veterinary Care

We recommend that all cats be microchipped and spayed or neutered. You’ll also want to keep up with Fluffy’s wellness care. Many of our feline patients don’t come in as often as they should! Regular exams greatly increase the chances of any medical issues being caught early on. It’s also important to stay up-to-date with vaccinations and parasite control.

Keep Kitty In

Fluffy is very curious, and loves to explore her domain. However, your adventurous feline friend will be safer and healthier staying indoors. Kitties that go outside face some very serious dangers, such as cars, weather, predators, and chemicals, to name just a few.

Playing will benefit your drowsy little pet in many ways. It keeps her active, prevents kitty boredom, and allows her to burn off excess energy. It also offers mental stimulation, which will become very important as your furry friend grows older. Plus, it’s cute to watch!

Cats are basically adorable little bundles of mischief, especially when they are young. The average household contains quite a few things that are dangerous to playful pets. Toxic plants, plastic bags and ties, wires and cords, and small or sharp objects are just a few things you’ll need to keep out of paws’ reach. Ask your vet for more information.

Stress and anxiety can really take a toll on your cat’s health. Keep Fluffy’s little motor going by paying lots of attention to her. Your furry buddy will also appreciate having some kitty comfort items, like warm beds, scratching posts, toys, and catnip.
