Fido’s Fitness Routine

March 15, 2020

Does your dog love to run and play? Or is Fido more of a couch potato, who only runs when he hears a food wrapper crinkling? No matter which group your pet falls into, it’s important for him to stay active. Otherwise, your canine pal may become obese, which will put him at increased risk of developing some very dangerous health issues! If your pooch is already obese or overweight, he’ll need to get on a good exercise regimen. A Virginia Beach, VA vet discusses doggy workouts in this article.

Benefits of Activity

Exercise is important for many reasons. First and foremost, it will help keep Fido fit. In fact, those daily doggy workouts are crucial to helping your pup maintain a healthy weight, and warding off doggy obesity. (We know, chubby dogs are cute, but your pooch will be much healthier staying at or near his ideal weight.) Fido’s workout will also help him burn off excess energy and work off any angst he is feeling. This is very helpful in curbing bad behaviors, like digging and chewing. Tired dogs are good dogs!

Types Of Activity

The daily walk is the only thing that is pretty much safe for any dog. Aside from that, your furry pal’s exercise needs will depend on his age, weight, size, and breed. For example, swimming may be a great workout for a Retriever, but it’s off the table for a brachycephalic dog, like a pug, as they get winded too easily. Some dogs also shouldn’t be encouraged to jump or stand on their back legs, as this can put too much stress on their hips. Do some breed-specific research, and ask your vet for advice.

Playing can also be a fun workout for Man’s Best Friend. Spend a few minutes a day tossing a ball or stick for your pet, or hold a laser pointer for him to chase. One way to increase the intensity of your canine friend’s workouts is to stand at the top of a hill, so he has to run uphill to return to you. If your furry buddy loves playing Fetch , you may want to get him an automated ball launcher. This may be just as entertaining for you as it is for Fido!
