Helping Your Pet Trim Down

April 1, 2020

Is your pet overweight or obese? Do you have a furry little (or not so little) butterball on your hands? We know, chubby pets are cute, but they face some very serious health risks. Read on for some tips from a Virginia Beach, VA vet on helping your four-legged buddy lose weight.

Consult Your Vet

If you know or suspect that your pet is pudgy, consult your vet. It’s important to get an idea of how much weight your four-legged friend needs to lose. Plus, you’ll want to get some specific advice on your furry pal’s diet.

Take It Slow

Never put a dog or cat on a crash diet. This can wreak havoc on their metabolism, and could make your beloved pet very sick! Slow and steady is the route you want to take here.

Portion Control

Portion control is a huge factor in pet obesity. Even giving Fido or Fluffy ten calories too many each day can cause them to gain a pound a year. That’s a lot for a dog or cat! Pay attention to serving sizes.

Limit Treats

Many people love to indulge their pets with treats. There’s nothing wrong with that, in and of itself. Treats are a great way to make our animal companions feel loved! Just be careful not to go overboard. Snacks should only make up about 5 percent of your pet’s daily caloric intact. Spoil your fuzzy pal with toys and ear scratches instead.

Don’t Fall For Theatrics

We really can’t discuss pet obesity without at least touching on Fluffy and Fido’s talent for begging. Some of our patients have their humans firmly wrapped around their paws! You’ll be less apt to fall for that soulful stare if you know your pet is eating exactly what they should be. If you absolutely can’t resist, give your furry little actor something healthy instead of that fatty treat they’re eyeing.

Play!

Now for the fun part. Just as with people, exercise also plays a role in determining your pet’s weight. Most of our furry patients have the same favorite workout: playing. Spend time every day tossing a stick or ball for Fido, or holding a laser pointer for Fluffy. This may be fun for you both!
