Ways to Keep Your Dog Healthy

February 15, 2021

February is Pet Dental Health Month. Our canine pals can develop many different dental issues. These problems aren’t just painful for your pup. They can also cause or contribute to other issues, and can really take a toll on Fido’s overall health and well-being. Fortunately, there are some things you can do at home to keep your dog’s choppers in good health. A Virginia Beach,VA vet lists some of them below.

Brushing

Brushing is just as beneficial to Fido as it is for us. You’ll need to train your four-legged friend, of course, which may take some time. Start by just rubbing your dog’s teeth and gums as you are petting him. Then, start incorporating pet toothpaste and a pet toothbrush. Offer treats and praise, to help your pup form a good association with the process.

Chew Toys

Chewing can actually be very beneficial to Fido, as long as he is chewing something appropriate, and not your gym sneakers. The process helps keep your furry friend’s jaws strong. It also promotes saliva production, which will help clean your dog’s mouth. Not all chews are safe for every pooch, though, so ask your vet for recommendations.

Dental Products

If your furry buddy won’t sit still long enough for you to brush his teeth, you may need to try other options. There are actually quite a few options available, including chews, dental flakes, oral rinses, and dental-formula treats and kibble. Ask your vet which ones are suitable for your pet.

Water

Making sure your canine companion always has clean water is very important for many reasons—survival being of course first and foremost. However, this is also good for Fido’s dental health. You can also give your pup the occasional ice cube to chew on when it’s hot out.

Exams

Fido should have his teeth checked by a vet at least once a year. At home, you’ll need to keep an eye out for signs of trouble. Some common red flags include bad breath, tartar buildup, bleeding gums, excessive or bloody drool, and swelling. Your pooch may also lose interest in play, or change his eating habits. Call your vet immediately if you notice any of these signs.
