Do you have a n active dog? One of the best things about Fido is the fact that he’s so energetic. There are few things that epitomize the word ‘joyful’ the way Man’s Best Friend does! Given that April is Canine Fitness Month, this is a great time to talk about how to keep your furry buddy fit and healthy. A Chesapeake, VA vet offers some tips on this below.
Daily walks will go a long way towards keeping your pooch in good shape. Even if you have a yard for Fido to run and play in, your pet will still need regular exercise. Plus, the change of scenery will do both of you good!
Playing serves several purposes for your furry best friend. It helps keep him entertained, and will fend off those dreaded bored-doggy blues. Plus, running and jumping are great workouts for Fido! If your four-legged friend likes games like Fetch , by all means indulge him.
Exploring trails is also a fun thing for an active pooch to do. Of course, not every pup has the endurance for hiking. You’ll want to check with your vet first. If Fido gets the all-clear, then make it a habit to take him on some doggy adventures. Everything is better with pets!
Swimming can also be a great workout for Man’s Best Bud! Just put safety first. Never leave Fido unattended near water, and don’t take him anywhere with strong currents, steep drops, or heavy wakes.
Going to the park can be a fun way to let your pup socialize with his friends. There are a few caveats here, however. Don’t let your furry friend go off leash without first surveying the dogs that are already there. If you see any bullying or aggressive behavior, take Fido for a walk instead.
If you and/or Fido are more adventurous, you can look into more involved activities. Our canine companions have tried many different sports, such as dock diving, skateboarding, and agility, to name a few.
Keep in mind that all our canine companions are unique, and their workouts should be as well. Some are not suited for strenuous activities, while others shouldn’t swim or even run much. Ask your vet for specific advice.
