Hug Your Cat Day

June 1, 2021

There’s a pre tty adorable cat holiday coming up. Hug Your Cat Day is June 4th. If there ever was a pet that was made to be hugged, it’s Fluffy. Kitties are not only super soft and super cute, they’re the perfect size to fit in our arms or in our laps. There are a few things to keep in mind when hugging your feline buddy, though. A local Virginia Beach, VA vet lists some of them below.

T ime It Right

First and foremost, you’ll need to make sure Fluffy is in a mood to snuggle. Otherwise, your cuddle session may end up with you getting scratched! Keep in mind that kitties are notorious for changing their moods quickly and unpredictably. Your furry pal could be purring and affectionate one minute, and struggling to get away the next. Just go with the flow. When your cute pet has had enough, just let her go.

Hold Fluffy Properly

Hugging a cat isn’t exactly rocket science, but there are some things to keep in mind. Make sure that your feline pal’s weight is supported properly. Never hold a kitty around the stomach. This is very uncomfortable for Fluffy, and can actually cause internal injuries! Ideally, your pet’s weight should be on her rump or back legs. If your furball wants to drape herself around your shoulders, that’s fine, too.

Start Young

Another important rule of hugging cats? Always be sure to give kittens extra hugs. This is very important for socialization. (Remember that one: it means you always have an excuse to cuddle kittens!)

Fluffy’s Rules

Some cats just don’t like being hugged. There’s nothing wrong with that! Our feline overlords all have their own purrsonalities, just like people do. If Fluffy isn’t much for being petted or held, you’ll just need to spoil her in other ways, such as by giving her toys, treats, and catnip.

Be Gentle Letting Go

Take care when putting your furry friend down on the ground. Don’t let go until her paws are touching down. If Fluffy decides to launch herself out of your arms, try to at least get her onto a chair. This is extra important with kittens and senior cats, as they can be quite fragile.
