Did you know that National Kitten Day is July 10th? Baby cats may just be the cutest things on the planet. It’s amazing how quickly little Fluffy can melt your heart. However, adopting any pet is a big commitment, and a big responsibility. Read on as a Virginia Beach,VA vet offers some kitten care tips.
Kittenproofing is a must. Address potential hazards, such as toxic plants, wires and cords, plastic bags and wrappers, and anything small or sharp. Keep in mind that baby cats can fit into some very tiny spots. Seal off openings beneath furniture and cabinets, and keep major appliances, such as toilets, closed.
Little Fluffy has a lot to learn before she has mastered all those teeth and claws. Offer her plenty of fun toys to practice her pounces on, and take time to play with her daily. If your feline friend tries to attack you, gently dissuade her by telling her ‘No’ or ‘Play nice’ in a firm, disapproving tone.
Your furry pal will go through a major growth spurt in that first year. Make sure her body is properly fueled up and ready by offering her a great, kitten-formula pet food. Ask your vet for specific recommendations.
When your feline companion is all grown up, she can use any litter that you and/or she likes. For now, though, avoid clay and clumping litters. These can be very dangerous if ingested!
Little Fluffy may think of herself as a lion, but she’s actually very small, and is susceptible to many different illnesses. You’ll need to bring your little ball of fur in a few times this year. A thorough exam is on the agenda, as are microchipping and spay/neuter surgery. Your kitten will also need her initial vaccines and parasite control products. At home, watch for potential signs of illness. Contact your vet right away if you notice anything.
Cats can form very strong bonds with their humans, but that special friendship has to be nurtured. Spend lots of time with your cute little pet! Talk to her, play with her, and let her doze off in your arms. There are few things more precious and heartwarming than kitten purrs!
