Signs Your Cat Needs To Go To The Vet

August 15, 2021

Take Your Cat To The Vet Day is August 22nd! Making sure that your kitty sees her doctor regularly is very important. In fact, this is one of the best things you can do for your feline pal! Of course, in addition to taking Fluffy in for her regular appointments, you’ll also need to bring her in if you know or suspect that she isn’t feeling well. Cats can get pretty secretive when they’re sick, so it’s important for you to know what to look for. A Virginia Beach, VA veterinarian lists some warning signs below.

Poor Grooming

Most cats are very clean, and take time to groom themselves daily. It’s not unusual for senior kitties to get a bit unkempt, as they sometimes have a hard time reaching their whole bodies. However, a younger feline that suddenly loses interest in her normal beauty regimen may be sick.

Litterbox Issues

If your furry buddy seems to be having trouble urinating or defecating, contact your vet immediately. This can be a sign of a serious medical emergency!

Lack Of Appetite

Our feline buddies can be finicky. That said, if Fluffy is just being fussy about her food, she’ll complain about it until you offer her something different. A complete lack of appetite is a different story.

Lethargy

We know, being lethargic seems to be a life goal for many cats. However, if Fluffy isn’t really responding to stimuli, and seems to be spending all of her time sleeping, she could be ill.

Respiratory Issues

Cats should breathe quietly through their noses, except of course when they are yelling about something. Coughing, wheezing, and gasping are definitely not normal, and can be indicative of serious issues.

Vomiting/Diarrhea

We all know that hairballs are fairly common in kitties. Frequent, excessive, or violent vomiting is definitely not normal, though. Diarrhea is also a sign that something is going on.

Uncharacteristic Behavior/Vocalizations

It can also be a clue when a kitty just doesn’t seem like herself. For example, a cuddly cat that suddenly hisses when you touch her could be sick. Changes, increases, or decreases in your furry pal’s vocalizations can also be a sign that something is wrong.

Please do not hesitate to reach out if ever we can be of assistance. As your Virginia Beach, VA animal clinic, we’re here to help!
