Walk Your Dog Week

October 1, 2021

It’s Walk Your Dog Week! Those daily walks are very important for your pet, both physically and mentally. Fido also loves exploring different places. Read on as a local Virginia Beach, VA vet offers some advice on taking your furry best buddy for a stroll.

Change It Up

Fido gets bored with the same old, same old. Change up your dog-walking routes regularly. If you don’t have many options in your neighborhood, take your fuzzy friend to nearby trails sometimes. This will be good for both of you!

Paw Care

Don’t forget that Fido is running around barefoot … or bare-pawed. Pay attention to where you and your canine buddy are walking. Go around things like sharp rocks and broken glass. In summer, you’ll also need to be wary of scorching pavement. Keep your pooch on soft ground as much as you can.

Fido should know basic obedience commands, like Stay, Come, and Heel. If your furry pal lunges, you’ll also want to break that habit. One way to do that is to immediately change direction any time your four-legged friend tries to pull you. It may take a while, but eventually he’ll realize that trying to haul you along gets him further away from his goal.

Make sure that your canine pal has a comfy harness or collar. You’ll also need a leash that won’t snap or break if something startles Fido. Retractable leashes are fine, but they aren’t safe in every area or situation.

Your own gear is also important. Wear boots, shoes, or sneakers with good tread. You may want to get a pack or jacket just for dog walking. Keep it filled with things you may need, such as waste baggies, treats, spare keys, and personal safety items.

Always put your pup’s safety first. Stay alert and aware of potential hazards. This could be anything from cars to stray dogs to snakes.

Don’t think of walking Fido as a chore. It’s a great way to spend some time with your canine companion, and maybe just gather your thoughts a bit. The time we have with our furry friends often passes much too quickly: it’s important to make the most of it.

Please reach out with any questions or concerns about your dog’s health or care. As your local Virginia Beach, VA animal clinic, we are here for you.
