Holiday Hazards For Pets

December 15, 2020

The holidays are officially here. This year may be a bit different than previous years, but there will still be plenty of folks enjoying some quiet quality time with their loved ones, and enjoying seasonal traditions and treats. Just be sure to put your pet’s safety first! A local veterinarian Virginia Beach, VA lists a few hazards to be aware of in this article.

Decorations

Pets are very frisky and curious, which is of course adorable. Unfortunately, they don’t necessarily know what is and isn’t okay for them to play with. Many popular decorations can be quite dangerous to your furry friend! Things like tinsel, ribbons, garlands, and lights can choke or strangle playful pets, and can cause serious internal problems if ingested. Ornament hooks, pine needles, and anything small or sharp are also unsafe. If you have a pocket pet, such as a bunny, Guinea pig, or gerbil, you’ll need to take extra care with lights and wires, so your pet doesn’t chew them.

Food

Unsafe foods are a huge concern here. Pets love to beg for treats, and often nibble on anything that falls to the floor. Unfortunately, many of our favorite foods are toxic to our animal companions. While every pet is a bit different, there are some things that aren’t safe for any of them. This includes garlic, onions, scallions, and chives; chocolate; caffeine; alcohol; raw meat, dough, or yeast; meat on the bone; anything with seeds or pips; xylitol; and junk food. For cats and dogs, grapes, currants, and raisins are also on the no-no list. Ask your vet for more information.

Plants

Holly, ivy, mistletoe, and yew are classic seasonal decorations. Sadly, they are poisonous to our animal friends. If you get real plants, keep them out of paws’ reach.

Stress

Stress can also be very dangerous to pets. Many of our furry friends find any type of change distressing. Loud noises, travel, and even guests can all unsettle your little buddy. Even decorations can be a cause of anxiety. That inflatable reindeer in your neighbor’s yard may look like a dangerous intruder to your dog, while your kitty may be frightened of that singing snowman. Pay extra attention to your animal companion, and make sure they feel loved and safe.
